What the F**k is GitHub Actions

Alright, listen up folks. I’ve been in the tech world for a while now, and I’ve seen my fair share of buzzwords and hyped-up technologies come and go. But this whole “GitHub Actions” thing has me scratching my head, wondering what the actual f**k is going on.

For those of you living under a rock, GitHub Actions is a continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) tool introduced by, you guessed it, GitHub. It allows developers to automate their software development workflows right within the GitHub platform. Sounds simple enough, right? Well, apparently, this is the hottest thing since sliced bread, and companies are going nuts trying to hire developers with GitHub Actions skills.

I mean, sure, automating build, test, and deployment processes is undoubtedly useful. But isn’t that what CI/CD tools like Jenkins, Travis CI, and CircleCI have been doing for years? What’s so special about GitHub Actions that has everyone losing their minds?

Maybe it’s the fact that it’s tightly integrated with GitHub, which is already a developer’s best friend for version control and collaboration. Or perhaps it’s the simplicity of setting up workflows using YAML files, which even a caveman could understand (no offense to cavemen).

But seriously, why are job postings these days treating GitHub Actions like it’s the second coming of Christ? I’ve seen job descriptions that read something like, “Must have at least 5 years of experience with GitHub Actions” – a tool that was only released in 2018! Do these hiring managers understand the concept of time?

Don’t get me wrong; I’m not hating on GitHub Actions. It’s a powerful tool, and I can see why it’s gaining popularity. But the level of hype surrounding it is borderline ridiculous. It’s like everyone suddenly forgot about all the other CI/CD tools out there and decided that GitHub Actions is the only way to go.

Maybe I’m just getting old and grumpy, but I can’t help but feel like this whole GitHub Actions craze is just another example of the tech industry’s obsession with shiny new toys. It’s like we’re all a bunch of magpies, constantly distracted by the latest and greatest thing, even if it’s not that different from what we already have.

Whatever the case may be, one thing is certain: GitHub Actions is the new hot commodity in the tech world, and if you don’t have it on your resume, you might as well be living in the stone age. So, buckle up, folks, because the GitHub Actions hype train is leaving the station, and it doesn’t look like it’s slowing down anytime soon.

Cheers,

Sim
